Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Rebecca Dallet is the second candidate to announce plans to run for the Wisconsin Supreme Court in 2018.
Dallet announced on Thursday her intentions to run for the seat currently held by Judge Michael Gableman. Gableman has not yet announced his plans.
Dallet was elected to the Milwaukee County Circuit Court in 2008 and re-elected in 2014. She worked as a state and federal prosecutor for 11 years before that.
She has served as presiding judge for both the domestic violence and misdemeanor courts.
“Our courts and our election system need to be held to the highest standard of independence,” Dallet said in a statement. “We need a strong recusal rule, and we need judges who will ensure that bias is removed from the courtroom. It’s time for the era of special interest influence to end.”
Dallet is a faculty member of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges and is associate dean of the Wisconsin Judicial College. She is also president of the Milwaukee Trial Judges Association and secretary of the Association for Women Lawyers.
Gableman, elected in 2008, is one of the court’s five conservative justices. Supreme Court races are officially nonpartisan, but are increasingly fought on ideological lines.
Dallet joins Madison attorney Tim Burns as the two announced candidates for the race.
